Owner Klaus Piber and Chef Partner Alexander Theil invite world-renowned chef Diego Muñoz to cook at a two-day event at Latin dining hotspot Mercado in Vienna’s elegant first district, as a part of his European Exploration Tour.

Wednesday April 13th and Thursday April 14th.

Widely renown as one of the world’s most talented and creative chefs, Diego Muñoz flawlessly executes a complex layering of flavors with extreme attention to detail with an innovative and clean style.

Until very recent Executive Chef at the world renowned Astrid y Gastón at Casa Moreyra in Lima, Peru, since 2012, where he led the restaurant from #42 to current #14 on San Pellegrino’s Top 50 Worlds Best Restaurants and #3 of best Latin American restaurants.

This January Diego Muñoz announced his departure from Astrid y Gastón, instead to devote his 2016 to culinary exploration, adventure and limited time-based projects around the world, with the highest possible culinary value in a melting pot of different cuisines and cultures, and in that way create the formula of the culinary DNA for his future restaurant to be.

During a highly concentrated 2016 Chef Muñoz explores Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Middle East. Read more about this in The New York Times.

In Vienna Diego Muñoz and his team along with the experienced kitchen staff of Mercado, presents a tantalizing casual, sharing plate menu of delicious servings as Diego Muñoz created it at La Barra, just next door to Astrid y Gáston in the culinary palace headquarters of the historic hacienda of Casa Moreyra.

Chef Muñoz elaborates:

“This style of cooking comes from the inspiration of old Limeñan canteen bars, where you enjoy nice pisco cocktails, good beers or local wines paired with traditional dishes made of old Peruvian recipes. Dishes to be share at the table.”

“Bringing this style of food to Mercado is a celebration of this old tradition, and what better than bringing it to beautiful Vienna at a restaurant that so diligently looks into Latin roots?”

Klaus Piber, owner of Mercado, has travelled for culinary experiences throughout Latin America for decades. His interest and passion for Latin America was born when he met his wife, Luz, who originates from the Dominican Republic.

On one of their many trips, Luz & Klaus Piber experienced Casa Moreyra in Lima, where they enjoyed the cooking style and ambiance of both Astrid y Gastón and La Barra, and especially at La Barra the style goes very well with the philosophy of the everyday market cuisine at Mercado.

Klaus Piber explains:

“We enjoyed the two styles of cooking at Casa Moreyra. The very experimental menu, “memories of my life as a child” where a culinary story was told from the perspective of Peruvian childhood memories up to the time when he grew up and the more classical dishes in the sister restaurant.”

“We were very impressed by the diversity of Diego’s cooking styles and creativity. We are very much looking forward to introducing his distinctive style to our guests here at Mercado!”

Mercado is a lively restaurant located in the heart of Vienna where Latin American joie de vivre is spread. Vibrant colours as far as the eye can see: floral sofas, multicoloured walls, flowers pictured all around.

Every day the restaurant presents an innovative and modern take on Latin American cuisine. Executive Chef Partner Alexander Theil introduces an eclectic array of exquisite dishes freshly prepared and seasonally based.

The restaurant features an exotic blend of flavors from Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Argentina, Cuba and various other Latin American regions.

Latin ingredients also find their way onto the crafted cocktails which are made with fresh fruits infused in spirits of Pisco, Cachaça, Mezcal, Tequila or Rum.

An extensive wine list features bottles from Latin America, Spain, Italy, France, Austria and the United States, as well as all natural wines and craft beers.

The separate and secluded Cigar Lounge located in a beautiful old cellar stirs up an era gone by – 1950‘s Cuba – and is an exquisitely comfortable place to relax, unwind and enjoy an after dinner drink.

At Mercado you can enjoy a cuisine with a fascinating mix of cultures; the result of a vibrant heritage and transcendental immigration history.

After the two-day feast Diego Muñoz’s menu is served at Mercado until May 22nd, prepared by the safe hands of Chef Theil and his experienced team.
